Montego Bay Hip Strip: Beaches, Jerk, Nightlife & More in St. James
Holiday Jamaica
21 Oct 2026
Your guide to MoBay's most famous street, for visitors and locals alike
Sun, sea, jerk smoke and a soundtrack of reggae: welcome to the Hip Strip, Montego Bay's liveliest stretch of waterfront. Officially it's Jimmy Cliff Boulevard (formerly Gloucester Avenue), renamed in honour of the reggae legend, but everybody still calls it the Hip Strip.
Whether you're a cruise passenger with a few hours to spare, a resort guest looking to get out and explore, or a local planning a beach day and a night out, the Hip Strip packs a lot into one walkable strip.
The best way to enjoy the Hip Strip is beach by day and food and music by night. Here's how to do it.
📍 Where Is the Hip Strip?
The Hip Strip runs along the sea between downtown Montego Bay and Sangster International Airport, just a few minutes away by taxi. At one end is the airport and Dead End Beach; at the other is the old fort and the road into downtown.
🏖️ Beaches & Water Fun
Doctor's Cave Beach
The Hip Strip's most famous beach, with powdery sand and calm, crystal-clear water. Doctor's Cave Beach is run by the Doctor's Cave Bathing Club and has lifeguards, changing rooms and chair rentals.
- Hours: Daily, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm
- Entry: About US$8 for adults, US$4 for children under 12
- Tip: Go in the morning, when it's quietest
Harmony Beach Park
Want a beach day without the entry fee? Harmony Beach Park is a free public beach park run by the UDC, with a boardwalk, green spaces and a beach area. You only pay for parking. It's a favourite with local families on weekends.
Dead End Beach
At the airport end of the strip, Dead End Beach is a laid-back local spot and one of the best places in Jamaica to watch planes come in low over the water at sunset.
Get Out on the Water
The waters off the Hip Strip are part of the protected Montego Bay Marine Park. Operators nearby offer:
- Catamaran cruises with snorkelling stops
- Glass-bottom boat rides
- Jet skiing and parasailing
Note: Walter Fletcher Beach (Aquasol) is currently closed, so check before you go.
🍗 Where to Eat
The Pork Pit
A Hip Strip classic for jerk chicken and jerk pork, best with festival and a cold drink. Locals and visitors have been lining up here for years.
Pelican Grill
A MoBay landmark with an old-school 1970s vibe. Come hungry for a proper Jamaican breakfast: ackee and saltfish, callaloo, fried dumplings and Blue Mountain coffee.
Marguerites Seafood by the Sea
For a special night out, Marguerites serves seafood and fine dining right on the water, with beautiful sunset views.
Jerk Beyond the Strip
Got wheels? The famous Scotchies Jerk Centre is a short drive away and well worth the trip.
💡 Local tip: Restaurants on the strip charge tourist prices. Head a few streets back from the waterfront for cheaper cookshop meals.
🎉 Nightlife on the Hip Strip
Margaritaville Montego Bay
The Hip Strip's biggest party spot. Margaritaville is a restaurant, bar and seaside water park with a water slide and trampolines by day, and turns into a reggae and dancehall nightclub after dark.
Coral Cliff Gaming & Entertainment
Right across from Margaritaville, Coral Cliff offers gaming, a bar and entertainment. It's a good stop if you want to keep the night going.
Lounges & Bars
The strip has a rotating mix of lounges, sports bars and beach bars. Names that come up regularly include Blue Beat Ultra Lounge, Lounge 2727 and Rehab Sports Bar & Grill. Ask your hotel or taxi driver what's hot that week.
🎶 Reggae Sumfest Street Dance
Visiting in July? During Reggae Sumfest week, the Hip Strip hosts a free street dance, one of the best ways to experience Jamaican music culture with the locals.
🛍️ Shopping & Culture
- Old Fort Craft Market: at the downtown end of the strip, next to Fort Montego. Wood carvings, paintings, jewellery, Rasta caps and souvenirs.
- Harbour Street Craft Market: just into downtown, with MoBay's largest selection of crafts, open daily from about 7 am to 7 pm.
- Duty-free shops and boutiques along the strip sell jewellery, watches and gifts.
- Usain Bolt statue: snap a photo with the life-size sculpture of the world's fastest man, made out of bolts.
- Sam Sharpe Square: a short taxi ride downtown, this square honours National Hero Sam Sharpe, leader of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion. Don’t miss The Cage, the historic lock-up in the square.
💡 Shopping tip: Bargaining is normal at craft markets, so be friendly and smile. Bring small bills in JMD or USD.
👨👩👧 Things to Do for Locals vs Visitors
| If you are… | Try this |
|---|---|
| A cruise passenger with a few hours | Doctor's Cave Beach + lunch at the Pork Pit + the craft market |
| A family | Margaritaville water park by day, Harmony Beach Park for a free beach |
| On a budget / a local | Harmony Beach Park, Dead End Beach for plane-spotting, cookshops off the strip |
| Here for the nightlife | Sunset at Margaritaville, then the lounges along the strip |
| A culture lover | The Old Fort and Harbour Street craft markets, Sam Sharpe Square, Sumfest in July |
💡 Tips for Visiting the Hip Strip
- Use licensed taxis. Look for red PP licence plates, and agree the fare before you get in.
- Expect vendors. Hustlers and vendors can be persistent, especially in the late afternoon. A polite "no thanks" and keep walking does the job.
- Stay on the main stretch at night. Take a taxi rather than walking long, dark stretches.
- Keep valuables out of sight on the beach and in crowds.
- Bring cash (JMD or USD) for beach entry, craft markets and street food.
- Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. The midday sun is strong.
🌀 After Hurricane Melissa: Is the Hip Strip Open?
Yes. Hurricane Melissa hit Montego Bay hard in October 2025, but the Hip Strip bounced back quickly. Doctor's Cave Beach, Margaritaville, Coral Cliff and Harmony Beach Park were all back open by late November 2025, and most businesses in the city are operating again.
A few places are still recovering. The Grand Decameron hotel on the strip is expected to reopen as Muthu Diamond Lagoon in December 2026, and Aquasol remains closed. A government plan to "reimagine" the Hip Strip is also in the works, so expect improvements over the coming years.
🚗 Getting There
- From Sangster International Airport: just a few minutes by taxi
- From the cruise port: a short taxi ride
- Parking: limited on the strip itself. Harmony Beach Park has paid parking.
✨ Why Visit the Hip Strip?
