Overview

Fort Montego looked like a big fort, and it was situated at Montego Bay St. James. Five smaller weapons and four 12-pounders were stored there. It was a poorly designed fort that was constructed to protect the entrances to the town of Montego Bay.

In honour of Havana's capitulation in 1760, a gunner was killed when one of the fort's ancient cannons detonated. A few years later, renowned Jamaican historian Edward Long discovered the fort in disrepair and questioned whether it was worth restoring because of its unimportant position. The fort's officers mistakenly believed an English ship to be a French privateer in 1795, which was the only time they shot at a ship. Fortunately there were no casualties.
