A Glimpse into Jamaica’s Early History

Stokes Hall Great House was built by Luke Stokes, a former Governor of Nevis who came to Jamaica during the early period of English colonization. According to the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT), Stokes arrived with more than 1,600 settlers after the English takeover of Jamaica.

The original settlement was established in an area known as Stokesfield, while the surviving settlers later moved to higher ground where Stokes Hall was established. The location provided a strategic position overlooking the surrounding landscape.

A Great House Built for Protection

Stokes Hall was more than a plantation-era residence. Historical records describe the building as having exceptionally thick walls, with defensive openings that could be used for small firearms. Towers at the corners of the main structure also served as lookout points.

These features reflect the uncertain conditions of Jamaica's early colonial period, when estates and settlements were concerned about attacks and conflict.

The house was also designed as a family residence, with large bedrooms and other features intended to make it a comfortable home despite its fortified construction.

The 1907 Earthquake

The Stokes Hall Great House survived for centuries before being severely damaged by the 1907 Kingston earthquake. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust states that the earthquake destroyed the Great House, leaving the ruins that can still be seen today.

The remains provide an opportunity to see traces of one of Jamaica's early historic residences. The National Library of Jamaica also documents the ruins as the remains of a historic house destroyed by the 1907 earthquake.

Why Stokes Hall Great House Is Important

Stokes Hall is significant not simply because of its age, but because it connects several important chapters of Jamaica's history. Its story includes early English settlement, the development of estates, the history of enslaved people who constructed and worked on these properties, and the eventual decline of the Great House itself.

The JNHT's development proposal notes that the structure was built by enslaved people who came to Jamaica with Luke Stokes. Historical references also describe the ruins as potentially among the oldest surviving English structural foundations in Jamaica.
